White ground, with an all-over repeating pattern of delicate scrolling stems bearing a variety of flowers, fruit and foliage, with butterflies. Flowerheads composed of very spiky rosettes. The colours of the design are reds, pink, violet, and two shades of blue. No yellow surviving. The waistcoat is fairly long, single-breasted, with three pockets. It is lined with white linen having a woven pattern of delicate pink and blue cross-stripes, creating the effect of a violet openwork chequer pattern.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"}],"techniques":[{"text":"mordant dyed","id":"THES260477"},{"text":"resist dyeing","id":"AAT53053"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, mordant and resist-dyed (chintz); lined with linen","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2017KB5851","2017KB5852","2017KB5853","2017KB5854","2007BN1828","2007BN1901","2006AN8089","2017KB5855"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CNTX","id":"THES49199"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Waistcoat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Coromandel Coast","id":"x32021"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Fabric was produced on the Coromandel Coast"},{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"waistcoat"},{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Waistcoat was tailored in Great Britain"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1770-1775","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1775-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Fabric was produced c.1770-1775"},{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"c.19th century","earliest":"1795-01-01","latest":"1903-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Waistcoat was tailored in 19th century "}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"86","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"117.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"When acquired, the waistcoat was accompanied by another, of identical material and lining fabric, but cut in a short style which was passed onto the Calico Museum.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Waistcoat, mordant-dyed and resist-dyed cotton (chintz), Coromandel Coast for the British market 1770-1775; tailored in 1800s; Textiles; Clothing","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Crill, Rosemary, <u>Chintz: Indian Textiles for the West</u>, London, 2008.","id":"AUTH325004"},"details":"","free":"Crill, Rosemary. <u>Chintz : Indian textiles for the West</u> London: V&A Publishing, 2008, Cat.
