F.R.I.B.A., 64 Larkhall Rise, Clapham, London in 1887.\r\n\nFor many years this fragment was recorded as 'Formerly in the house owned by General Henry Ireton (1611-1651) at Highgate, London.'\nThis misattribution is the result of a great deal of muddle in the naming of neighbouring Highgate houses over the centuries. \r\nLauderdale House was occupied by John Ireton (not General Henry) during the Civil War.\r\nIn the 18th century a house next door to Cromwell House was built and named Ireton House.\r\nThere is no known reason for the name Cromwell House having been given to it, beyond the nearby Ireton references. There is also a prevalence of military motifs on the staircase and a fireplace, which probably arose from the position of the builder as a Captain of Trained Bands in the City. The house was built 1637-8 by Richard Sprignell, from a prosperous City family, who became a supporter of the Parliamentary party, despite being made a baronet by Charles I in 1641. The frieze is most likely to have come from Cromwell House, where three plaster ceilings and one frieze (in a room without a ceiling) survive. \r\nA devastating fire in 1865 caused much damage to Cromwell House, including the ceilings on the first floor. A clause in the lease required them to be repaired (using gypsum, not lime) but it seems that the frieze in the room on the 1st floor with a Jacobean-style ceiling was not reproduced. This seems the most likely source of this fragment which should be dated c1640.\r\n\nLiterature\r\n\nPhilip Norman, Cromwell House, Highgate, Survey of London Monograph 12 (1926).\r\n\nCaroline Knight, London’s Country Houses, Chichester (2009), 194-6 and 358-60.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Architectural frieze, section, floral scrolls in low relief, England, c. 1640","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Bilbey, Diane with Trusted, Marjorie, British Sculpture 1470 to 2000.
