This present statuette, although carved in wood, is in the long tradition of the bronze equestrian statuette, and it appears to be a reduced copy of Westmacott's colossal original. The sculptor is unknown, but it was probably made about 1831.\n\nThe Westmacott was a prominent family of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English sculptors. Sir Richard Westmacott was trained at Rome under Canova, then member of the Academy of Florence. He returned to London in 1797 and became a prolific worker and had a large and prosperous practice second only to Chantrey's.
