The scenes depicted here are the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Transfiguration, the Raising of Lazarus, the Maries at the Sepulchre and the Meeting in the Garden.\r\nOriginally the plaque might have been part of a diptych. If this is the case, it is clear that the plaque was later reused. Both lateral borders were shaved down to reduce the width of the plaque and perhaps to eliminate the hinge holes on the right side. It is probable that the plaque was employed as a book-cover, probably on a western manuscript. Judging by the wear at the upper right and the flattening effect of the abrasion to the upper arm of the apostle behind Christ in the Raising of Lazarus scene, it would seem likely that it served as the back cover. One might expect that the now-missing right leaf was set into the front cover.","physicalDescription":"Ivory panel. On the top the The Annunciation and the Nativity with the Wahsing of the Christ Child. In the middle the Transfiguration and the Raising of Lazarus. On the bottom the Maries at the Sepulchre and Christ with the Maries in the Garden (the Chairete). On top and bottom are narrow borders of leaf elements. There are three holes both at the top and bottom, now filled with either bone or wood plugs. Two fruther plugged holes along the right edge; and another two in the middle row, near the left border and on teh right , between Christ and Lazarus. The back is plain.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Elephant ivory","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"Byzantine","id":"AAT20669"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2009CA6723","2009CA6722","2009CR3485","2009CR3461","2009CR3460","2006AN5891","2010EL7239","2017KB8434","2018KX3846"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"8 (VA)","id":"THES49714"},"free":"","case":"CA8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}],[{"text":"Plaque","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Constantinople","id":"x33871"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"or the Holy Land"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"12th century","earliest":"1100-01-01","latest":"1200-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"REPRO.1873-50","id":"O1226843"},"association":"Copy"},{"object":{"text":"NCOL.347:1-2011","id":"O1226842"},"association":"Duplicate"},{"object":{"text":"NCOL.347:2-2011","id":"O1226842"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at left","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at right","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at top","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at bottom","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.38","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries 2006","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"D L II ... / Priori ... / Dom ... / Wienhoc [ft?]","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"This inscription in ink is visible on the back of the plaque. In this group compositions tend to be crowded with comparatively small-scale figures, their heads seen in almost full profile but with features carved on the steeply cut concealed side.","briefDescription":"Panel, ivory, Scenes from the Life of Christ, Byzantine (Constantinople) or the Holy Land, 12th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects acquired in the Year 1867. <font -u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
