He developed the ‘crayon manner’ technique of printmaking, using tools derived from ornamental metalworking. The crayon manner sought to imitate the appearance of a chalk or pencil drawing at a time when drawing was very much in vogue. The image is made up of a series of dots in order to re-create the way that chalk adheres to the grain of paper. The printmaker engraves or etches these marks on to the printing plate with a variety of small toothed tools, some with rotating ends.","physicalDescription":"Image of a woman with back to viewer, printed in the crayon manner in red ink","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gilles Demarteau","id":"A7258"},"association":{"text":"etcher","id":"AAT25174"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Boucher, François","id":"A2037"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching in the crayon manner printed in red","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM0455","2006AM0454","2006AT1529"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"EE","shelf":"224","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"etched","id":"AAT53840"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1786","earliest":"1781-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"etched","id":"AAT53840"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Etching, crayon manner, colour printed in red.
