He brought it to England, where it took root. Stipple engraving is a method of rendering tone with dots and short flicks. It involves a mixture of engraving and etching. It was popular for mythological, classical and pastoral themes, and answered a demand for decorative prints. The prints were designed to be framed as ‘furniture prints’ and used as schemes of interior decoration.
