Unusually Goya has executed it entirely in aquatint. Aquatint is a method of etching in tone. The tone is achieved by applying a porous ground of acid resistant particles (finely powdered asphaltum or resin) to the metal printing plate. When the plate is immersed in acid, pits are etched in the metal where it is unprotected between the particles. This gives a grainy texture when printed.
