This dance represents Shiva as the moving force of the universe and his five supernatural acts of creation, preservation, destruction, embodiment and release (of the souls of men from illusion). The last purpose might be linked to the idea that release can be found in the fire of the cremation ground, perhaps here symbolised by the ring of flames round the dancer.\n\nHe is chubbier than most Nataraja images. The arch is almost circular with a fringe of densely packed flames. The base has a deeply modelled lotus.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast bronze","categories":[{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AH3054"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES371690"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Thanjavur","id":"x32011"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"688","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by E.L.Cappel","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze figure; Shiva Nataraja, South India, 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mitchell, A.G.
