It is made of copper which has been cast and tinned. It is decorated with engraved designs inlaid with black composition on hatched ground, all in the style of contemporary Western Iranian metalwork. The inscriptions on the outside of the rim, first reproduced by A.S. Melikian-Chirvani in his catalogue of Iranian metalwork in the V&A (Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World 8-18th centuries, HMSO 1982, cat. 165) are written in nasta'aliq and include verses by Hafez. There is also an inscription identifying the owner, Khwaja Muhammad Bajiv (?) Kashmiri, and the date. The bowl was bought for the museum in Kashmir for £1 4s by Caspar Purdon Clarke on his Indian purchasing trip in 1881-2. Given the Kashmiri owner, the 19th century provenance and characteristics of the design, it is likely that the bowl was made in Kashmir.","physicalDescription":"Wine bowl; copper, cast and tinned, with engraved champleve designs inlaid with black composition on hatched ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"copper, cast engraved and tinned","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AW2859","2017KE3048","2017KE3049","2017KE3052","2017KE3053","2017KE3058","2017KE3062","2017KE3064","2017KE3065","2017KE3066"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"BritishMuseum","id":"THES50124"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}],[{"text":"Wine bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kashmir","id":"x32584"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1617","earliest":"1617-01-09","latest":"1617-12-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"1026 AH = 9 January 1617-28 December 1617"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"155","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"03/07/2017","earliest":"2017-07-03","latest":"2017-07-03"},"part":"","note":"As measured by Diana Heath"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"236","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/07/2017","earliest":"2017-07-30","latest":"2017-07-30"},"part":"","note":"As measured by Diana Heath"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"93","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"foot ring","note":"As measured by Diana Heath"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"[Persian verses by Hafez in mozare' metre]","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Morn has come, o cupbearer, fill our bowl with wine\r\nThe whirling heavens do not tarry, make haste\r\nBefore this perishable world is made a ruin\r\nMake a ruin of us with a bowl of rose-red nectar\r\nThe days of roses like life itself hastened to go\r\nCupbearer make haste pass round the rose-red nectar","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Translation published by A.S.
