He is usually shown barefooted in South Indian images, while wearing high boots in the north. This figure is somewhat unconventional; it holds the stem of the lotuses in two of the four hands while the others hold the conch and discus. This appearance corresponds to a stone image in a temple in Belur. Surya is regarded as the source of all knowledge and, as the origin of solar energy, of the laws that govern the universe and human society. He is highly regarded among the agricultural communities due to his control over the seasons.\n\nThe likely identity is indicated by the sun's rays framing the head. In North India Surya usually wears high boots; this figure is barefooted. He hold a conch and chakra in his upper hands; the attributes in the lower hands are unclear. He stands on a simple low stepped square base. Brass colour with some red lac, little wear.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"bronze cast, brass ","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2014HB4127"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES372143"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mysore","id":"x30900"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th Century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"690","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum, London, in 1879.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze figure; Surya, South India (probably Mysore), 19th Century.\r\nDeccan ?, 1825-1875.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mitchell, A.G.
