The courtesan sports an elaborate carved lacquer hair ornament and wears a large sash tied at the front and decorated with a bird and flower design. The two attendants have tortoiseshell hair ornaments, their robes being decorated with the same cherry blossom crest that appears on the courtesan's robe. They wear large sashes tied at the back. The painting is not signed. It has been variously attributed to Engetsudo (Ishikawa Sekishin) and Furuyama Moromasa, a late follower of Hishikawa Moronobu. Specific attribution aside, it is fine example of a <i>bijin-ga</i> or 'beautiful woman painting' of the sort that was popular in mid- to late-18th-century Edo, as Tokyo was then known.","physicalDescription":"The painting is in a modern black and gold frame and is mounted in two silk brocades, the outer brocade decorated with flying geese and clouds in white on blue and the inner strips of brocade decorated with stylised irises growing from a pool in gold on yellow. The oiran has an elaborate carved guri lacquer hair decoration and wears a large sash tied at the front and decorated with a bird and flower design. The two kamuro have tortoiseshell hair ornaments and their robes are decorated with the cherry blossom mon (crest) which is also seen on the oiran's robe. They wear large sashes which are tied at the back.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colours on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AN8667"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"TR025","id":"THES394671"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hanging scroll","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1740-1770","earliest":"1735-01-01","latest":"1775-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"103.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painting","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"56.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painting","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pap, Japan, paintings and drawings.
