Their intention was to make original work by contemporary artists accessible to the general public. Prints in the series mostly depict simple, familiar scenes aimed to appeal to such an audience. Ardizzone, already well known as an illustrator, was an obvious choice for Contemporary Lithographs. He was extremely popular, thanks to his keen eye for human behaviour and attitudes and his delight in the commonplace.","physicalDescription":"colour lithograph depicting group of four people, including a large woman in blue dress, arguing with a bus conductor who is not allowing them onto his bus, a man in a bowler hat, a man in a yellow suit and a woman in red coat and hat.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ardizzone, Edward Jeffrey Irving","id":"A6948"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Contemporary Lithographs","id":"A6949"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Transport","id":"THES48881"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2021MW2494","2006AL2288"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"ES","shelf":"105","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1938","earliest":"1938-01-01","latest":"1938-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"46.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"printed surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"61.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"printed surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"50.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"67.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Edward Ardizzone","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature","note":"Signature; pencil"},{"content":"Published by Contemporary Lithographs Ltd.
