She became one of the most innovative wood-engravers of the 20th century, using an enormous range of tools and a virtuoso technique to create an extraordinary sense of light and movement. She often used a larger format than was conventional for this medium, and a circular block.","physicalDescription":"Wood engraving, circular image of mushrooms, thistle heads, chestnuts and blackberries","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hermes, Gertrude","id":"A6936"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"engraving block","id":"x35494"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wood engraving","id":"AAT53303"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood engraving on paper","categories":[{"text":"prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"English Neo-romantic","id":"x35515"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM0733"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"254","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1935","earliest":"1935-01-01","latest":"1935-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"39.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Gertrude Hermes Autumn Fruits","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature and title","note":"Signature and title; pencil"},{"content":"1935","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; pencil"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Autumn Fruits' by Gertrude Hermes. The striking contrast between the black and white areas is enhanced by richly-textured detail.
