He began his career as a mezzotint-engraver and later turned to photography, becoming the leading specialist in the photographic reproduction of paintings in England. This engraving reproduces a painting by the popular Victorian animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), which is also in the V&A collection. Using several engraving techniques, Hollyer has created variations of tone and texture that correspond well to the original painting.","physicalDescription":"Print after the 1837 painting by Edwin Henry Landseer.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hollyer, Frederick","id":"A4345"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Landseer, Edwin Henry (Sir, RA)","id":"A8593"},"association":{"text":"painters (artists)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"mezzotint","id":"AAT53233"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"mixed mezzotint on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Death","id":"THES48970"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020ML3235"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES316870"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1869","earliest":"1869-01-01","latest":"1869-12-31"},"association":{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr. P.N.
