The glitter of the scene and the shimmer of the costumes come from sharp, clearly defined, engraved lines. The printmaker pushed these directly into the metal printing plate using a tool called a burin. The landscape is composed of the softer strokes that are characteristic of etching. Etching involves using a needle to draw through a soft acid-resistant coating on the plate, allowing for finer and more fluid lines. Immersion in acid then bites the lines into the metal itself.
