The gateway, with its two imposing octagonal towers, was known as a 'bunga' and was one of several built during Ranjit Singh's reign for the use of Sikh chiefs visiting Amritsar. It was common for watercolourists and photographers to place a 'native' in front of the building being recorded to provide a sense of scale.","physicalDescription":"Arched gateway of Ram Bagh revealing the cutcherry (courthouse) inside, with two imposing octagonal towers and minarets on either side.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beato, Felice","id":"A6896"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AW3387"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES403841"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Amritsar","id":"x31116"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1858-1860","earliest":"1853-01-01","latest":"1862-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"After the Indian army 'mutinied' in 1857 Felice Beato travelled through India photographing the sites connected with it.
