To make a colour lithograph a separate printing surface is required for each colour. Full colour lithography as a way of reproducing paintings was in use from about 1820. As many as 25 different lithographic stones might be used to produce a colour lithograph of this sort. At the time of its production such intense colour in prints was rare, and regarded with suspicion. This print was sold with a free woodcut of the same image, as if to give it credibility.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph on paper depicting Ulysses deriding the cyclops Polyphemus","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Turner, Joseph Mallord William","id":"A8934"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"},{"name":{"text":"Ogle, John Connel","id":"A6879"},"association":{"text":"lithographer","id":"AAT25175"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"},{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AL4067"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EL","shelf":"146","box":"2"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1856","earliest":"1856-01-01","latest":"1856-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Horace Mummery","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from departmental notes","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lithograph entitled 'Ulysses deriding Polyphemus' (published by Rowney and Co.), engraved by J.
