Hopper's interiors frequently have a disturbing edge, reminiscent of the atmosphere conjured up by cinema; he has been said to have anticipated the cinematography of the great director of psychological thrillers, Alfred Hitchcock. Hopper was a gifted printmaker and made most of his etchings between 1915 and 1923, when he was working as an illustrator.
