It comes from an altarpiece carved with scenes of the Life of the Virgin. It shows the blindfolded woman who sits in an attitude of defeat, confined in a small cell-like space. She holds the tablets of the Old Testament in her left hand and a broken standard in her right. She represents the 'antitype' (or complete opposite) of the Virgin, who would be placed higher up, in the form of Ecclesia, the personification of the Church. She is dressed in clothes that were fashionable between about 1500 and 1550. She has a chain girdle round her waist. It reaches to the floor and ends in a bell-shaped tassel or pomander. To date, we know of no other altarpieces in the Netherlands that show this particular figure. However, there are examples of single figures in similar postures set in square panels. These figures are usually pairs of prophets and they are found on altarpieces that show the Infancy of Christ. There are several features that help to identify where and when the relief was made. These include the style of the drapery and the decoration of the costume. The energy of the figure and the high quality of the carving also suggest that it was probably made at the later Borman workshops. These workshops were active in Brussels around 1520-1530.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"polychromy","id":"AAT247962"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved oak, with the remains of polychromy and gilding","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AL5928","2006AE9181","2006AL5927"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brussels","id":"x31976"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"South"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1520-1530","earliest":"1520-01-01","latest":"1530-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relief, the Personification of Synagogue, carved oak with traces of polychromy and gilding, Southern Netherlands (Brussels?), ca. 1520-30","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Williamson, Paul, Netherlandish Sculpture 1450-1550, London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 2002. 160p., ill.
