Practising his art chiefly in\r\nthe British Isles and in America, he has left behind him the most\r\nremarkable series of authentic pictorial documents which has ever\r\nbeen bequeated to the world.\r\n\"Not only did this painstaking artist write on every portrait\r\nthe full name of his sitter, date when taken, home address and\r\nplace where taken, but he frequently pasted cuttings from con-\r\ntemporary news-sheets in his reference folios.\r\n\"Eduoart cut each portrait in duplicate from folden black\r\npaper. Placing one of the originals in a folio, he added the name\r\nof his sitter, date, and place where taken, just as a modern photo-\r\ngrapher keeps his negatives for reference ; he used his volumes \r\nalso for exhibition purposes. Edouart thus accumulated an enor-\r\nmous number of interesting portraits, not only of Kings and\r\nPrinces, such as those beautiful portraits taken by him at Holy-\r\nrood Palace in 1831, but one of the 'landed gentry and aristocracy,'\r\nwhose houses he visited, and also the humbler folk who thronged\r\nhis studio when he worked in a town or village.\"---- F. NEVILL\r\nJACKSON.\r\n The titles and descriptions given to E. 2421-2470 are those\r\nwritten in autograph by Eduoart on the back of each silhouette.'","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"August Amant Constant Fidèle Edouart, Miss Ann Browne.
