This piece reflects the late 19th- and early 20th-century shift in Vizagapatam workshops towards carving such caskets with scenes from Hindu mythology. It was almost certainly made at the workshop of Gangula Ramalingam, specifically for the Delhi Exhibition of 1902-1903. This was a vast fair of Indian arts and manufactures organised by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, to coincide with the Delhi Durbar, itself held to commemorate the accession to the British throne of King Edward VII. Lord Curzon was an avid collector of Indian art and purchased this piece at the Delhi Exhibition.","physicalDescription":"Casket is sarcophagus-shaped, the centre of the pitched lid with panel representing the coronation of Rama with attendants. The panel is surrounded by a band of dancers and animals amid foliage. The borders are repeated around on all sides with carved animals and foliage and include birds, elephants monkeys, squirrels, cats and a tiger.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ramalingam, Gangula","id":"A29908"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sandalwood","id":"AAT12724"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"lac","id":"AAT12946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sandalwood, veneered with panels of carved and pierced ivory","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN0143","2006AN0147"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES372546"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Casket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vishakhapatnam","id":"x30955"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1901","earliest":"1896-01-01","latest":"1905-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Curzon Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 16/12/2009 for Furniture Gallery survey: 13.5 x 34 x 21.5cm","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Domestic, sandalwood ivory horn, Vishnakhapatnam","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jaffer, Amin <font u>Furniture from British India and Ceylon: A Catalogue of the Collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum</font u>.
