Frequently heavily worked with dynamic lines and dramatic lighting, the series demonstrates John's admiration for the draughtmanship of the great artists of the past. Many of them were published in 1906 to accompany a major exhibition of his prints organised by the Chenil Gallery. The American sculptor, Jacob Epstein moved from Paris to London in 1905 and became acquainted with John and other members of the New English Art Club.
