The word is an acronym of a Russian phrase meaning 'Project for the Affirmation of the New', and the artist explained the concept in a lecture at Inkhuk (The Institute of Artistic Culture) in Moscow as 'a changing-station between painting and architecture'. After a successful exhibition of Prouns in Hanover in 1922, organised by the Kestner-Gessellschaft, a society founded in 1916 to promote new art, Lissitzky was commissioned to produce a portfolio of six lithographs that the society published in 1923; this print is from that portfolio.","physicalDescription":"Geometric forms in shades of black, white and grey.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lissitzky, El","id":"A6815"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Kestner Gesellschaft","id":"A24752"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Suprematist","id":"AAT21405"},{"text":"Constructivist","id":"AAT21393"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM0739"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"188","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1923","earliest":"1923-01-01","latest":"1923-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"59.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"El Lissitzky","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"hand written","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature","note":"Signature; hand written; pencil"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lazar (El) Lissitzky, 'Proun III', 1923","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Timmers, Margaret (Ed).
