A number of them involve the use of felt and fat, a reference to a traumatic experience in his youth. In 1943, while serving in the German Air Force, his aircraft crashed in the Crimea in winter. He was rescued by nomadic Tatars, who treated his wounds with fat and wrapped him in felt to keep him alive. In this print and its pair in the V&A (E.945-1981), he pays tribute to his rescuers with the symbolic image of the felt suit (which was an actual garment made by Beuys and which reappears in other works) and a cross that recalls both selflessness and survival kits.","physicalDescription":"print on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beuys, Joseph","id":"A6811"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"letterpress","id":"AAT178926"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed paper, inscribed by hand in ink","categories":[{"text":"prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"health","id":"THES48942"},{"text":"clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[{"text":"post modern","id":"AAT22208"},{"text":"Conceptualism","id":"x35405"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM0741"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"35","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1971","earliest":"1971-01-01","latest":"1971-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"79.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Der Eurasier lasst schon grussen Joseph","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"German","medium":"blue ink","method":"handwritten","position":"","script":"inscribed by hand","translation":"The Eurasian sends warm Greetings Joseph","transliteration":"","type":"1) Makers's mark 2) Signature","note":"1) Makers's mark 2) Signature; German; inscribed by hand; handwritten; blue ink"},{"content":"Hauptstrom","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"German","medium":"purple ink","method":"dye stamp","position":"","script":"","translation":"main current","transliteration":"","type":"1) Makers's mark","note":"1) Makers's mark; German; dye stamp; purple ink"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Druck I' by Josef Beuys.
