Vizagapatam was a long-standing centre of fancy cabinetwork. This piece was made at a time when craftsmen working there began to produce objects mainly of wood embellished with ivory touches, rather than exclusively of ivory, in order to appeal to a wider market. For the same reason they also made this form using porcupine quills, which was a cheaper material.","physicalDescription":"Sandalwood work basket.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sedachellum","id":"A6707"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sandalwood","id":"AAT12724"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"lac","id":"AAT12946"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sandalwood, with borders of ivory, engraved and highlighted with lac; silver mounts; carved ivory lotus, bun feet and engraved carrying handle","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN1318"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES372322"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Basket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vishākhapatnam","id":"x30955"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1855","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sandalwood work basket, ca.1855, Andra Pradesh.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jaffer, Amin <font u>Furniture from British India and Ceylon: A Catalogue of the Collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum</font u>.
