Early Vizagapatam products are made of ivory and expensive hardwoods. In order to appeal to a wider market, in the 19th century craftsmen began producing less costly articles that required less ivory and were less time-consuming. This bookstand is a typical product of that period.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sandalwood","id":"AAT12724"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"lac","id":"AAT12946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sandalwood, partly overlaid with ivory fretwork, engraved and highlighted with lac, secured with ivory rivets; silvered brass hinges","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN1041"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES372503"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sliding book stand","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vishakhapatnam","id":"x30955"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1867","earliest":"1862-01-01","latest":"1871-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"13","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furniture, satinwood ivory, Vishnakhapatnam","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jaffer, Amin <font u>Furniture from British India and Ceylon: A Catalogue of the Collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum</font u>.
