Yet the new fine earthenware products of Staffordshire were becoming popular. Talented members of the Wood family produced a range of original figure models. They were cheap to manufacture and simply but richly decorated in coloured glazes. These figures started a fashion that led to the manufacture of vast quantities of flatbacks from the mid 1800s. Flatbacks were figures with flat backs, designed to stand on a mantelpiece or shelf.","physicalDescription":"Earthenware figure of a recumbent deer with stained lead-glazes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wood, Ralph","id":"A6792"},"association":{"text":"modeller","id":"AAT25417"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Wood, Enoch","id":"A6793"},"association":{"text":"modeller","id":"AAT25417"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Wood, John","id":"A6794"},"association":{"text":"modeller","id":"AAT25417"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Burslem Factory","id":"A6795"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Brownhills Factory","id":"A6796"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"lead glaze","id":"AAT233430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing (coating)","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware with stained lead-glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Figures & Decorative ceramics","id":"THES48954"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AW2797","2007BN3687","2017JW1110"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"138 (VA)","id":"THES49875"},"free":"","case":"14","shelf":"6","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Staffordshire","id":"x29181"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1770-1780","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr W.
