The lid is marked out for various games, including cribbage, chess and fox and geese. It lifts up and folds out into a velvet-lined writing slope with compartments for ink, pens and paper. The maker has decorated the box with inlay of sadeli, a type of micro-mosaic made up of faceted strips of wood and ivory. The sadeli technique was widely practised in the area around Bombay. This piece was made in Calcutta, probably by a family of sadeli artisans who had migrated there from Bombay at sometime round about the 1850s.","physicalDescription":"Writing box and games board.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"rosewood","id":"AAT12424"},{"text":"sandalwood","id":"AAT12724"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"brass (alloy)","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"velvet","id":"AAT133711"}],"techniques":[{"text":"inlay (process)","id":"AAT53850"},{"text":"mosaic","id":"AAT138684"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Rosewood, inlaid with ebony, ivory and sadeli, the exterior veneered, the interior lined with sandalwood, with a brass lock, silvered brass hinges and purple velvet lined writing surface","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN0175","2006AN0174"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344542"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Writing case","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kolkata","id":"x32018"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1855-ca. 1867","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1871-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"31","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired by the Indian Museum possibly from the Universal Exhibition, Paris of 1855 or 1867.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Writing box and games board, rosewood, c.1855 or c.1867, Calcutta.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jaffer, Amin Furniture from British India and Ceylon: A Catalogue of the Collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum.
