Although the foliage and scenes from Hindu mythology are typically South Indian, the shape of the table derives from an English book of furniture designs, <i>The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified</i>, published in 1829 and reissued as late as 1862. The author, Thomas King, described the design as a 'work table in the French style', and its production by sandalwood carvers in South India provides an idea of how reliant certain schools of India furniture-making were on western pattern books.
