The chairs and matching footstools were made in Berhampur, India. The intricately carved ivory elements demonstrate the exceptional ability of local craftsmen of the <i>bhaskar</i> caste, who were renowned for their skill at working ivory. The chairs were probably designed for display at the Exposition Universelle, held in Paris in 1855. In his important work on ivories, W. Maskell described this suite as an example of exceptionally poor design. He thought 'these astounding specimens' showed ' vulgarity and bad taste' and 'a waste of a valuable and beautiful material'.","physicalDescription":"Footstool, ebony, inlaid and mounted with ivory, with red velvet upholstery.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"inlay (process)","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ebony, inlaid and mounted with ivory, with red velvet upholstery","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN0387","2006AN0385"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344185"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Footstool","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brahmapur","id":"x35372"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1855","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"01216(IS)","id":"O71146"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"01217(IS)","id":"O71152"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"01219(IS)","id":"O71153"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879. 1880 Register Entry: [Room 8.
