The artists who made such pieces were Muslim and the carved decoration of their wares consisted principally of floral and geometric motifs, sometimes with finely carved inscriptions and verses of poetry in Persian. The high quality of such articles confounded contemporary critics, who were astonished that superior objects of this type were being made at such a distance from both raw materials and patronage.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular Ink-stand of ebony carved with foliate and geometric designs with canted corners.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Abdullah, Muhammad","id":"A6772"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved ebony, with silver lock, hinges and mounts","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AN0367"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES372596"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Inkstand","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nagina","id":"x35367"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1866","earliest":"1866-01-01","latest":"1866-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"23","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Made by Abdullah Mistry, son of Nur Muhammad, resident of Nagain in the zila of Bijnur, in 1283 hijri'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"1) Decoration 2) Makers's mark","note":"1) Decoration 2) Makers's mark"}],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum in 1879. 1880 Register Entry: [Room 8.
