'Die Brucke' together with another group, 'Der Blaue Reiter' (The Blue Rider), formed in Munich, were the backbone of the German Expressionist movement. The Expressionists experimented with the processes of printmaking, treating lithographic stones and etching plates in unprecedented ways. Schmidt-Rotluff only began making lithographs in 1906, but already this self-portrait shows a remarkable grasp of the physical possibilities of the medium.","physicalDescription":"Lithographic print in black ink on paper: head of a man smoking a pipe.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl","id":"A6717"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Expressionist","id":"AAT21502"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM2004","2011EU9477"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"36","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1907","earliest":"1907-01-01","latest":"1907-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Dr Rosa Schapire","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"printed surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"printed surface","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"31.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Karl Schmidt Rottluff Mann mit Pfeife","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"German","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature and title","note":"Signature and title; German; pencil"},{"content":"1907","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; pencil"},{"content":"Pr[robedrucke]","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"German","medium":"pencil","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"proof","transliteration":"","type":"1) Makers's mark","note":"1) Makers's mark; German; pencil"}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed to the museum by Dr. Rosa Schapire","historicalContext":"Dr. Schapire was a close friend of the artist and author of the standard catalogue raisonné of his\r\nwork up to 1923.","briefDescription":"Karl Schmidt-Rottluff: Man with Pipe (Self portrait).
