This portrait was commissioned by Ernest Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, who had been introduced to Rodin by the British sculptor John Tweed and who became one of Rodin's earliest admirers in Britain. Eve Fairfax (1871-1978) was briefly engaged to Beckett and she sat for Rodin several times during the period 1901-9.\r\n\r\nTheir meetings and correspondence brought Rodin to a closer, more personal knowledge of his sitter. He admired her cool Englishness and what lay beneath her calm exterior, describing her as 'A Diana and a satyr in one'. He also said, referring to her, 'How flat chested they are. Oh, those planes and the bony structure of these English women.'\r\nThis bronze appears to have been cast from a clay or plaster study. The marble version given to Eve Fairfax by Rodin is now in the Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rodin","id":"A6634"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Montagutelli Freres","id":"A13415"},"association":{"text":"foundry","id":"AAT25260"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AP6267","2006AY0021","2006AY0016","2006AX9960","2006AX9953","2006AX9923","2006AX9897","2006AX9845"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"21","id":"THES49848"},"free":"","case":"WN","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust Miss Eve Fairfax","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1904-1905","earliest":"1899-01-01","latest":"1908-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Rodin in November 1914","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"450","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"800","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"42","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"600","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Rodin","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Back of the right shoulder","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"1) Signature","note":"Signature; Back of the right shoulder"},{"content":"MONTAGUTELLI FRES. / CIRE PERDUE.
