She would have been dressed in a purely white ensemble for the sacred part of the ceremony and then changed into this colourful outer-kimono for the celebratory banquet. The garment is patterned with auspicious motifs. There is a dense landscape of pine, bamboo, plum blossoms, peonies and chrysanthemums, while cranes form the central motif on the back and fly around the shoulders and long-tailed turtles are shown in the waters at the hem.  ","physicalDescription":"Outer kimono (uchikake) with long, 'swinging sleeves' indicating that it was worn by a young woman. Silk crepe with embroidery and resist-dyeing. The all-over design consists of billowing waves and rocks (confined to the lower section), pine, bamboo, plum blossoms, chrysanthemums and peonies. Cranes and long-tailed tortoises also appear. The garment was first resist-dyed, with stencils used to imitate tie-dyeing in places. Much of the design was then embroidered in silk and gold-wrapped silk threads. The garment is wadded and lined throughout with red silk.
