Raja Dhian Singh (1801-1844) kneels on a carpet against a bolster, facing his younger brother, Raja Suchet Singh (1796-1843). They were members of the Hindu Dogra family whose talents were rewarded with high office and titles under Ranjit Singh, but who contributed to the turmoil of the region following the ruler's death. The painting was probably done in about 1838-40, and is in the characteristic style of the Panjab Hills of the period, suggesting that it may have been done by an artist who left the patronage of one of the Hindu rajas to find new patrons in the Panjab Plains during the stability of Ranjit Singh's reign. The painting was given to the museum in 1953 by Robert Skelton, former Keeper of the Indian Department.","physicalDescription":"Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, depicting Raja Suchet Singh (1801-1844) dressed in yellow, seated with his older brother Raja Dhian Singh (1796-1843).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"},{"text":"Sikhism","id":"THES48894"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GD6479","2013GD6506","2006AJ6424","2019MC7807"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES403772"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Punjab Plain","id":"x35287"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1840","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1844-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr. Robert Skelton","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"208","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"24/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-24","latest":"2013-07-24"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"151","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"24/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-24","latest":"2013-07-24"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"24/07/2013 dimensions measured as part of Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project 2013; object irregular in shape","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed on reverse with three couplets in Persian.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Given by Robert Skelton, former Keeper of the Indian Department.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, Raja Suchet Singh and Raja Dhian Singh, opaque watercolour on paper, Punjab Plain, ca. 1840","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"Paintings of the Sikhs / W.G.
