Its shape derives from German stoneware jugs commonly used in Holland at that time. Dutch orders for Chinese porcelain in the 1630s had already included such jugs, which were copied either from turned and painted wooden models or from stoneware originals, and it is likely that similar means were used when placing orders in Japan. The coat of arms on this piece suggests that it was a special order made for Pieter de Graeff (1638-1707), who became a Director of the Dutch East India Company in 1664. After Japan's adoption of its Closed Door policy in 1639, the Dutch were the only Europeans allowed to trade in Japan, which they did through their base on the island of Dejima in Nagasaki Bay.","physicalDescription":"Of European-inspired shape, with ovoid body ribbed below and spreading foot, the narrow, ribbed neck widening into a short pinched cylinder forming the spout, with rounded loop handle, the handle ribbed and pierced near the top for the attachment of a lid. On the face of the jug is a European coat-of-arms in blue: the arms of the de Graeff family.Round the neck is a band of simple flower sprays flanked by narrow borders of floral scrollwork, and similar floral scrolls down the handle. The ribbed portions are painted blue and a border of 'classic scrollwork' encircles the foot.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"blue and white","id":"x44546"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain decorated in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2015HU2086","2015HU2093","2006AP9696"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES394886"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Arita","id":"x31992"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1665-1675","earliest":"1665-01-01","latest":"1675-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Ionides Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.375","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"from register","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"600","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/10/2026","earliest":"2026-10-08","latest":"2026-10-08"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jug, porcelain with decoration in underglaze blue and arms of the de Graeff family, Arita ware, Japanese, ca. 1665-1675","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jug with coat of arms of the de Graeff family\r\n1665–75\r\nArita kilns\r\nPorcelain painted in underglaze blue\r\nIonides Bequest\r\nMuseum no.
