The front of the vase contains an ornamental panel depicting a pheasant in gold on a silvered ground; the back has a similar panel inlaid with bamboo in mother-of-pearl and horn on a gilded ground.Around the middle is a band of shakudo, an alloy of copper and gold patinated to a rich black, which is further enhanced with translucent cloisonné enamel medallions.
