He studied at the Slade School of Art in London and from 1905 taught at the Central School of Art, also in London. Noel Rooke was an influential teacher who contributed to a revival of woodcutting and wood engraving, championing the techniqes as creative rather than simply reproductive mediums. His important innovation was his belief that woodcutting a d wood engraving should not try to imitate the stye of drawing or painting. Instead he flet that they could stand on their own aesthetic qualities and that the marks and lines that were antural to the woodcutting and wood engraving tools should determine the style.\r\n\r\nThis thinking is evident in 'The Two Bridges' om which Rooke has sued mainly white line technique, an effect which is natural to the relief process, Noel Rooke used 'The Two Bridges' in his book 'Woodcuts and Wood Engravings' to illustrate the variety of cuts and makrs that can be used in woodcutting.","physicalDescription":"Landscape with two bridges ","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Noel Rooke","id":"A5462"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodcut","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2206","2017JR8500"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"EW","shelf":"152","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Presented by the artst","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'The Two Bridges' by Noel Rooke (1881-1953); woodcut","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.450-1921"],"accessionNumberNum":"450","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1921,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
