They carry forked sticks. The painting is typical of works done in the Punjab, the region now divided between India and Pakistan, in the 1840s. The men are cultivators, and probably Jats, who widely converted to Sikhism. Their cut hair suggests that these men were Hindus, as conventional portraiture of the time makes a clear distinction between Sikh men with their uncut hair gathered into a topknot underneath their turban, and Hindus or Muslims, whose cut hair is usually shown underneath any head covering.","physicalDescription":"Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, two cultivators dressed in white loincloths, white turban bands and black and white shawls, walk across a field, each carrying a forked stick.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Sikhism","id":"THES48894"},{"text":"Agriculture","id":"THES250518"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GD6517","2006AJ6405","2019ME7162"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES403772"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Punjab Plain","id":"x35287"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"180","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"27/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-27","latest":"2013-07-27"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"138","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"27/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-27","latest":"2013-07-27"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"153","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"27/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-27","latest":"2013-07-27"},"part":"image within innermost painted borders","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"110","unit":"mm","qualifier":"maximum","date":{"text":"27/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-27","latest":"2013-07-27"},"part":"image within innermost painted borders","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"27/07/2013 dimensions measured as part of Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project 2013","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed on reverse in Persian characters, and in English in pencil: \"For .... book\".","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"IS.477 to 489-1950 were purchased for £5 in 1950.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, two cultivators, opaque watercolour on paper, Punjab Plain, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Paintings of the Sikhs / W.G.
