To produce a <i>cliché verre</i>, a design is scratched on a piece of smoked glass so that light can pass through where the soot has been removed. A piece of photographic paper is placed underneath the glass and together they are exposed to light. The blackened area of the glass thus acts as a stencil, protecting the sheet below from the light, resulting in the appearance of black lines on the paper corresponding to the lines that were scratched through the soot. Corot first used this technique in the 1850s.","physicalDescription":"Cliché verre on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Corot, Camille","id":"A6631"},"association":{"text":"print-maker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"clichés-verre","id":"AAT166116"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cliché-verre","id":"THES408045"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cliché verre on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AH0339"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"ES","shelf":"108","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1854","earliest":"1854-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cliché verre etching.
