The key to the technique lies in the application of particles of finely powdered acid-resistant materials to the printing surface of a metal plate. When acid is applied to the plate, it eats into those areas of the metal unprotected by the particles. Pits are created in the metal that gives a grainy texture to the image or design that results from inking the plate and printing it on paper.","physicalDescription":"Aquatint","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sandby, Paul","id":"A3135"},"association":{"text":"aquatinter","id":"AAT249564"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"aquatint","id":"AAT53242"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Aquatint on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Entertainment & leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM0248","2006AE8053","2017KJ6921"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"TOPIC","shelf":"3A","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1776","earliest":"1776-01-01","latest":"1776-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"48","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Paul Sandby; Windsor Terrass [sic] looking Westward; 1776; Aquatint","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Windsor Castle","id":"x31251"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"dogs (animals)","id":"x34865"},{"text":"toys (recreational artifacts)","id":"AAT211037"},{"text":"Costume","id":"AAT209261"},{"text":"Children","id":"x31526"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"leisure","id":"AAT138173"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.55-1891"],"accessionNumberNum":"55","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1891,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-24","recordCreationDate":"2002-11-20","availableToBook":false}}
