It now seems that Portuguese potters made these tin-glazed earthenware jugs for export to Germany. One clue is the clear influence of Chinese porcelain, which reflects the fact that the Portuguese were early traders with China.","physicalDescription":"Tin-glazed earthenware jug with pewter lid, painted in blue, with the initials PL, a merchant's mark on the bottom. Pear-shaped body, long narrow neck, loop handle and wide spreading foot. On the front in an eight-lobed medallion reserved amongst scrolled stems with flowers and foliage, are the arms of the city of Hamburg (triple-towered castle flanked by two lions rampant) with the date '1643' above.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"},{"text":"pewter","id":"AAT10979"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and pewter","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AW0768","2017KE2575"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"H1","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lisbon","id":"x32942"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1643","earliest":"1643-01-01","latest":"1643-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Alfred Darby, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"19.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'PL' [with a merchant's mark between the letters]","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'1643'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Above the coat of arms"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tin-glazed earthenware jug with pewter lid, painted in blue enamel, made in Lisbon, 1643.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Hildyard, Robin.
