They showed 'samples' of patterns and stitches and recorded how to achieve particular effects. In Europe in the 17th century samplers provided instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This sampler of 1758 continues the tradition of stitch and pattern exercises. The use of white thread on a white ground you can see here is known as whitework. It is very skilfully made and may be the work of an older, more experienced embroiderer.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, embroidered with silk, with pulled thread work","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AW1909","2006AW1908","2013GA7221","2006AP7591","2018KW7516"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES311532"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Denmark","id":"x28806"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1758","earliest":"1758-01-01","latest":"1758-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Francis Charles Oppenheimer KCMG","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Rebeckea Asg[ ] n 1758'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1758","earliest":"1758-01-01","latest":"1758-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidering; silk; 1758"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cotton sampler, embroidered with silk; Danish; dated 1758.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
