They showed 'samples' of patterns and stitches and recorded how to achieve particular effects. In Europe in the 17th century samplers provided instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This example continues the tradition of stitch and pattern exercises. It is very skilfully made and may be the work of an older, more experienced needleworker. The central picture is a scene from the New Testament story of Christ and the Woman of Samaria.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"},{"text":"wool yarn","id":"x30441"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk, wool and metal thread in cross, tent, brick, Florentine and rococo stitch, with padded and couched metal thread","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AP0804","2011EY9232","2017KC9347","2019LY5979","2019LY5994","2019LY5998"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES312779"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sweden","id":"x29198"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1751","earliest":"1751-01-01","latest":"1751-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"77.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"65.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'A G T anno 1751'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1751","earliest":"1751-01-01","latest":"1751-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidering; silk; 1751"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"See T.143-1962 for details of design source.","briefDescription":"Linen sampler embroidered with silk, wool and metal thread; Swedish or Danish; dated 1751.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
