In England and elsewhere in Europe in the 17th century, they developed into a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This example shows their usual format in the 18th century. No longer a long narrow piece kept rolled up for reference, it is more square in shape, suitable for displaying like a painting or print. Its moral verses, and the date and maker's name, are typical inclusions by this time.","physicalDescription":"Sampler of embroidered wool with silk in cross and satin stitch, and with eyelets.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Grace Catlin","id":"A6584"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered wool with silk","categories":[{"text":"household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AP0831","2006BF5279"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES311565"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1719","earliest":"1719-01-01","latest":"1719-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr C.
