In England and elsewhere in Europe in the 17th century, they developed into a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. The maker of this sampler, Martha Wheeler, has carefully embroidered the date and precise details of her age alongside a pious verse. Yet the sampler is unfinished: there is an unworked area at the bottom. The Florentine, or flame stitch, pattern, and the floral and other motifs are the type of decoration she might have embroidered for furnishings like fire screens or coverlets.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wheeler, Martha","id":"A6583"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk in tent, Florentine, Gobelin, satin, stem, chain and buttonhole stitch, with eyelets","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF5282","2006AP0182","2011ER8562","2011EW5023","2017KJ7200"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WE001","id":"THES388267"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1710","earliest":"1710-01-01","latest":"1710-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/09/2020","earliest":"2020-09-30","latest":"2020-09-30"},"part":"","note":"Measured by conservation"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/09/2020","earliest":"2020-09-30","latest":"2020-09-30"},"part":"","note":"Measured by conservation"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Martha / Wheeler her sampelr september the 15 1710 / aged 12 years the 2 day of last march'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1710","earliest":"1710-01-01","latest":"1710-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidering; silk; 1710"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Linen sampler by Martha Wheeler, embroidered with silk; English; dated 1710.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
