In England and elsewhere in Europe in the 17th century, they developed into a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This example shows their usual format in the 18th century. No longer a long narrow piece kept rolled up for reference, it is more square in shape, suitable for displaying like a painting or print. The subject here is Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714. The letters 'AR' stand for Anna Regina, her name and title in Latin.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidery","id":"AAT53653"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk and metal thread in cross, satin, split and chain stitch","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF5341","2006AP0815","2011EY9966","2017KB5188"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES311565"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Frank Green","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"31.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'A R' (for Anne Regina, Queen Anne)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidered","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidered; silk"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Linen sampler embroidered with silk and metal thread; England; early 18th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
