The design is drawn on to the printing surface and the areas to be printed are covered with grease while the blank ones are moistened with water. When greasy ink is applied to the printing surface it clings to the greasy areas, but not to the wet ones. The inked printing surface is then pressed on to the paper to transfer the image.\r\n\r\nKarl Friedrich Schinkel was an architect and designer. He was one of the first German artists to experiment with the new technique of lithography.","physicalDescription":"A pen lithograph of a Gothic church partly hidden behind a grove of oak trees.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schinkel, Karl Friedrich","id":"A5663"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"china paper","id":"AAT183651"},{"text":"pen","id":"x30618"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen lithograph on China paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AV8872"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"ES","shelf":"123","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1810","earliest":"1810-01-01","latest":"1810-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with assistance from The Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"33.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <u>Victoria and Albert Museum Department of Prints, Drawings and Paintings Accession Register for 1997</u>","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed and lettered 'Versuch, die lieliche sehnsuchtsvolle Wehmuth auszudrucken welch das Herz beim Klange des Gottesdienstes aus der Kirche herschallend erfullt, auf stein gezeichnet von Schinkel.'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"'Try to express the yearning beauty of the melancholy which fills the heart as the sound of worship ring out from the church, drawn on stone by Schinkel.'","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Between 1810 and 1821 Schinkel made sixteen lithographs, including the first ever made at the Institute of Lithography in Berlin.
