They were trials of patterns and stitches that had been copied from others, and records of particular effects achieved that could be recreated again. This is a type known as a band sampler. With the composition of band samplers comes the first clear indication in England of the form being used as a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. This example is one of a type that combine repeating patterns worked in coloured silks with areas of cutwork (holes that are cut and then bound by stitches) and needle lace stitches.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mackett, Elizabeth","id":"A6566"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk and linen in cross, two-sided Italian cross, satin, rococo and detached buttonhole stitch, with cutwork and eyelets","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AW1890","2006AW1889","2011EU1892","2011EU2520","2011EU2521","2011FB0677","2017KB3649"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES311879"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1696","earliest":"1696-01-01","latest":"1696-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"109.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Elizabeth Mackett 1696'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1696","earliest":"1696-01-01","latest":"1696-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"silk","method":"embroidering","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Decoration","note":"Decoration; embroidering; silk; 1696"}],"objectHistory":"A search on the International Genealogical Index produces only one likely candidate for Elizabeth Mackett; the daughter of Thomas Mackett, christened on 4 April 1681 at Godshill on the Isle of Wight.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Linen sampler by Elizabeth Mackett, embroidered with silk and linen; English; dated 1696.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Browne, Clare and Jennifer Wearden, eds. <font u>Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum</font u>.
