They were trials of patterns and stitches that had been copied from others, and records of particular effects achieved that could be recreated again. This is a type known as a band sampler. With the composition of band samplers comes the first clear indication in England of the form being used as a method of instruction and practice for girls learning needlework. Some band samplers, like this one, combine repeating patterns worked in coloured silks with areas of whitework.","physicalDescription":"Embroidered sampler","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lucun, Margreet","id":"A6565"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk in cross, two-sided Italian cross, long-armed cross, satin and detached buttonhole stitch, with eyelets","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF5310","2006AP0192","2011ER8506","2012FE3204","2017JU6098","2017KE7740","2017KE7741"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES311878"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sampler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1681","earliest":"1681-01-01","latest":"1681-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss A.
